Description:

The Beilstein database provides worldwide coverage of the literature relating to the preparations and properties of organic compounds. It also includes a chemical reactions database. Central to the Beilstein database is Beilstein's Handbuch der Organischen Chemie.

The Beilstein database is a comprehensive resource, containing fully searchable chemical structures and reactions, associated chemical and physical properties, and detailed pharmacological and ecological data. The CrossFire search engine is Beilstein's structure database management and indexing system.

The chronological index begins in 1771 and comprises more than

  • 8 million compounds
  • 5 million chemical reactions
  • 35 million associated chemical property and bioactivity records, including data describing pharmacodynamics and environmental toxicology, transport, distribution, and fate
  • 750,000 abstracts and titles indexed from the primary organic chemical literature since 1980

Beilstein indexes three primary types of data:

  • Substances: structural information, chemical and physical properties and bioactivity data, with the associated literature references
  • Reactions: preparations of substances and reaction pathways
  • Citations: citations, titles, and abstracts hyperlinked to substance and reaction entries
Coverage: 1979 to the present
Links: LitLink allows the retrieval of associated journal articles.
