SUBJECT: Preliminary results of depository library survey on pre-1977 cataloging for U.S. federal publications
You will find attached a summary sheet with the results from the surveys received as of June 13, 1990. We have since received 34 more, which I will include in our final report later this month. (NOTE: Final report was never completed) I have also attached two lists of the large depositories (75-100%) who indicated an interest in participating in the cataloging project:
LET ME REITERATE HERE THAT AN INSTITUTION’S APPEARANCE ON ONE OF THESE LISTS IN NO WAY INDICATES A COMMITMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY FUTURE CATALOGING PROPOSALS – THE LISTS ARE SIMPLY FOR INFORMATIONAL AND DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES!! However, if any depositories decide to pursue funding for cataloging these materials, these lists could serve as starting points for identifying other interested institutions.
We had a response rate of almost 50% for this survey. An overwhelming majority (86%) had not cataloged their pre-1977 federal publications, almost exactly half of the respondents felt that they received less than 25% of the pre-1977 titles from GPO. On the other hand, slightly over half of the responding institutions were willing to help identify unique titles in their collections for others to catalog. Only 12% of those who were willing to help with the cataloging project are OCLC "enhance" libraries, and, of those who expressed a preference (slightly over half of those willing to help catalog), 77% preferred the agency-by-agency approach to cataloging these materials.
Of those that had done cataloging of their collections, the following agencies were mentioned more than once:
24% of the respondents to question 3 on the survey indicated they had cataloged their entire documents collection since it was integrated into their LC or Dewey collections and their holdings were small for the pre-1977 time period. Only 17% of those who had done any cataloging were 75-100% depositories prior to 1977.
Finally, independent of the survey, we discovered that the Univ. of Illinois has been cataloging the Dept. of Agriculture publications with U.S. Dept. of Education Title II-C grant funding, and that they have reapplied this year to extend this project. Also, we have mailed copies of our Interior and Agriculture shelflists to Brigham Young, Clemson and the Univ. of Virginia, and our Smithsonian shelflist is being checked at Yale. Our hit-rate studies on OCLC for these three agencies are proceeding, and we still hope to complete them by the end of the summer.
