Official source for establishing geographic names when doing authority work. Provides PPL (populated place) and geographical coordinates.
Map Cataloging Resources

Shetl Seeker
"The JewishGen ShtetlSeeker is a database containing the names of all localities in the 31 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, plus all of the former Soviet Republics, and Turkey. The data is based on the U.S. Board on Geographic Names databases."
World Factbook (current edition) Washington, D.C.: U.S. Central Intelligence Agency
This compendium of country information is also useful for determining the political status of territories and possessions, which are often treated at length. Earlier editions have been archived by the U.S. Government Printing Office to assure permanent public access.

Cooperative Online Serials
The CONSER site includes a wealth of useful links, such as the CONSER Cataloging Manual Module 31 : Remote Access Computer File Serials, available from the Serials Cataloging Issues page. Serialists may also wish to read CONSER WG: Single v. Separate Records -- Draft Report.
Ethnologue: Languages of the World (Internet Version, 13th Edition)
This language assistant contains the "electronic version of the Ethnologue, the Ethnologue Language Name Index, and the Ethnologue Language Family Index."
IFLA Universal Bibliographic Control and International MARC Core Programme (UBCIM)
The UBCIM coordinates activities aimed at the development of systems and standards for bibliographic control at the national level and the international exchange of bibliographic data. It promotes the UNIMARC format and coordinates its development and Maintenance. The Programme also ensures the publication of information related to international bibliographic and format standards.

Classification Manual for the OAS Official Records Series
Includes general description and individual series.
Documents Online (World Trade Organization)
This database provides access to the official documentation of the World Trade Organization. The link to "FAQ and Help" will retrieve the title "Frequently Asked Questions About WTO Official Documentation," which includes information on document "nomenclature", that will be useful for catalogers.
FAO Terminology
Included here is the database, FAOTERM, which provides links to terminology databases of selected international organizations, and Sites of Interest, which contains links to some translation tools. A user can also link to FAO's organigram, the abbreviations used internally by FAO.
Interinstitutional Style Guide (European Union)
Of particular interest are the chapter on cataloguing data (see the index) and the appendix of abbreviations used in document symbols. There is also an appendix of emblems of the various institutions that make up the European Union.
United Nations Documentation: Research Guide
