Summary: The issues involved with cataloging government documents are complicated, changing, and
challenging. This workshop was designed to help documents librarians, paraprofessional staff,
and catalogers to identify some of the issues, learn more about GPO's records, learn more
about how MARC can be used in the ILS, and begin to formulate practices and policies to
better use GPO's records. The pre-conference covered loading records, MARC format, some AACR2, and the
kinds of customizing that can be done based on MARC fields to make records work the way libraries want them to.

Lunch sessions based on ILS allowed discussion of the various challenges of using
particular systems. Session were facilitated by librarians using the system. Following the last
featured presenter, the speakers and facilitators participated in a panel to review what was
covered, and discussed issues with the attendees. These Integrated Library Systems were for focus of lunch discussions:

The workshop was held in the 400-seat auditorium of the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality
Management, 9907 Universal Blvd, Orlando, Florida 32819. The
Universal Orlando Foundation Library at Rosen College graciously provided technical support for the pre-conference.

Topic: overview of MARC 21 format with emphasis on
how it facilitates access, permits customization of record loads, and can be used
to make processing and database maintenance more efficient.
Topic: GPO cataloging practices.

Methods used by record vendors and libraries to
take advantage of modern ILS features to facilitate access, processing and database
maintenance. Some specifics include: record load specifications, changed records,
brief records, electronic records only, ability to track record loads, reporting
capabilities, and customization services.
