Invitation to Hear Dr. George Basalla Speak
The University of Delaware Library announces that Dr. George Basalla, Professor Emeritus in History, will present an overview of his recent book, Civilized Life in the Universe: Scientists on Intelligent Extraterrestrials. The presentation is scheduled for Noon-1:00 p.m., Friday, January 5, 2007, in the Class of 1941 Lecture Room of the Morris Library as part of the UDLAPS (University of Delaware Library Assembly of Professional Staff) “Scholar and the Library Series.” The brown-bag luncheon program with light refreshments is open to the public.
Civilized Life in the Universe traces the influence of various scientific speculations on later speculations, showing an unbroken but twisting chain of ideas as they pass from ancient to modern times and from science to culture and back again. Throughout, Dr. Basalla interweaves his own view that scientific belief in and search for extraterrestrial civilizations is an impulse that is part anthropomorphic and part secularized-religious.
The Professional Development Committee of the University of Delaware Library Assembly of Professional Staff (UDLAPS) sponsors the series.
