Two New Databases Available
The University of Delaware Library announces licensed access to two new databases, RefWorks and Xreferplus. These databases are particularly supportive of the “research process” and will assist students in their work.
RefWorks is a Web-based service that allows researchers to create their own working databases by importing references from online resources such as Web of Science, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts databases, EBSCOhost databases, and many others. Researchers can then use these references in writing papers and preparing other documents, formatting the content and bibliography in a number of citation styles. To begin using RefWorks, each new user must first create a unique personal RefWorks login name and password by clicking on “Sign up for an Individual Account” on the RefWorks welcome page. To avoid having to keep track of multiple login names and passwords, users may wish to use their UD login name and password, if they so choose.
RefWorks organizes references as they are imported and thus the need for note cards and paper files is eliminated. It creates author, descriptor, and periodical name indexes for quick and easy information retrieval as well as both Quick Search and Advanced Search functionality. RefWorks also integrates with Microsoft Word, with its “Write-N-Cite” functionality and provides a user-friendly and easy-to-learn interface. It requires no download or installation of software and is available from any computer (PC, Mac, or UNIX) on the University of Delaware network or via the University of Delaware proxy server.
Xreferplus, a digital reference library, combines reference books from the world's leading publishers. Xreferplus includes some 100 dictionaries, encyclopedias, and guides covering art, biography, business, food, geography, history, language, law, literature, medicine, music, philosophy, psychology, religion, science, social sciences, and technology.
RefWorks and Xreferplus are accessible to faculty, students, and staff of the University of Delaware and are listed on the “Databases” page of the University of Delaware Library Web [http://www.lib.udel.edu/db]. Off-campus users using RefWorks and Xreferplus (as well as other licensed electronic resources) must authenticate themselves through proxy access. For proxy access information see “Off-Campus Access to Library Resources” [http://www2.lib.udel.edu/eresources/proxy/proxy_faqs.html].
