Library Images Now on Flickr

Images from digital collections at the University of Delaware Library are now available on Flickr.  Flickr is an application that allows for the sharing of images and building of communities over the Internet.

Currently, representative selections from the George Handy Bates Samoan Papers Photographs and the Willard Stewart WPA & HABS Photographs collections are available. A library user can view the Library's Flickr site at [http://www.flickr.com/photos/uofdlibrary/].

The project was implemented under the direction of Jaime Margalotti, Assistant Librarian, Special Collections Department.

Image descriptions
Each image is enhanced with three linking features:

                        * Full size with description (links to the ContentDM image record
with full description of the image)
                        * View entire image collection (links to the University of Delaware
                                    digital collection home page)
                        * Copyright (links to a notice on copyright restrictions for images
                                    from Library collections)

These links appear on the Library's main Flickr page [http://www.flickr.com/people/uofdlibrary/] and in the description of each individual image.

Additionally, there is a Creative Commons designation for each image to make the rights of the user as clear as possible.  More information about Creative Commons licenses is available at [http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/meet-the-licenses]

Subject Searching on Flickr

Flickr supports subject access by allowing the owner to assign user-friendly tags (or keywords) to images, and by allowing the user to post the images to "pools" belonging to subject specific groups.  The University of Delaware images are included in a variety of pools, including Delaware, Historic and Old Photos, and Libraries and Librarians.  Images are tagged liberally to expand searchability.  Clicking on tags is a popular way to navigate Flickr, so each image is given a variety of terms, including both the singular and plural forms of key words (i.e. ship and ships).
