Virginia Tech In Memoriam
The University of Delaware Library announces the exhibition "In
Memoriam" which provides tribute to the victims of the Virginia Tech
tragedy that occurred on April 16, 2007. The exhibition was implemented
under the auspices of the Faculty Senate Library Committee and is
located in the Information Room in the Morris Library.
The exhibition features the words of Nikki Giovanni, poet, activist and
Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech who said, "We will continue to
invent the future through our blood and tears and through all our
sadness...We will prevail...".
The exhibition includes the names of the twenty-seven students and five
members of the faculty who were killed at Virginia Tech. Among the
faculty members who died was Liviu Librescu, Professor in the Department
of Engineering Science and Mechanics whose publication record is
extensive. According to accounts by his students, Professor Librescu
stood in front of the door to his classroom in Norris Hall as the gunman
approached and directed his students to escape through the windows.
Nearly all of his students survived but Professor Librescu was killed by
bullets fired through the door.
Professor Librescu's publication record is extensive. Included in the
exhibition as representative of the combined achievements and potential
for achievement of the students and faculty who were killed, is his last
book, co-authored with Ohseop Song, "Thin-Walled Composite Beams:
Theory and Application" published by Springer in 2006.
