Library Announces The Digital Bibliography of Delaware
The University of Delaware Library announces the release of a new digital resource, The Digital Bibliography of Delaware. It is freely available to the public and is part of the University of Delaware Library Digital Collections (see: http://fletcher.lib.udel.edu/) or may be reached directly at http://fletcher.lib.udel.edu/collections/deb/index.htm
The Digital Bibliography of Delaware represents the combined work of several individuals, institutions, and organizations over a number of years. The monograph A Bibliography of Delaware Through 1960 was compiled by H. Clay Reed and Marion Björnson Reed and published by the University of Delaware Press in 1966 for the Institute of Delaware History and Culture. Its supplement, Bibliography of Delaware 1960-1974, was compiled by members of the Reference Department of the University of Delaware Library, and published by the University of Delaware in 1976. Biennial supplements to the Bibliography were then published by the Delaware Historical Society in its journal, Delaware History. In addition to published sources, additional items were included in the Digital Bibliography of Delaware obtained from a database compiled by Robert Fleck, Jr., proprietor of the Oak Knoll Bookstore and publisher, Oak Knoll Books in New Castle, Delaware.
Regular additions to The Digital Bibliography of Delaware are planned. Individuals who know of relevant publications that are not included are welcome to send the pertinent information (author, title, place and date of publication, and publisher) to Mary Durio, Head of the Preservation Department in the University of Delaware Library (; 302-831-0196).
The Digital Bibliography of Delaware includes over 10,700 entries. When available and suitable, a link is provided for those items which are available in the public domain in digital format in full text. The map image for the over 150 items in digital full text to date is then included (see as example Zachariah Jess, A Compendious System of Practical Surveying… http://cdm.lib.udel.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/deb&CISOPTR=4671&REC=1). By clicking on the title of an entry, the full record for the title can be viewed, and additional searches can be conducted on words in the record.
Producing The Digital Bibliography of Delaware was a joint effort under the leadership of Mary Durio, Head of the Preservation Department, including University of Delaware Library staff members in the Preservation Department, the Special Collections Department, the Bibliographic Control Department, and the Library Computing Systems as well as Robert Fleck, Jr. of Oak Knoll Books.
Susan Brynteson, the May Morris Director of Libraries commented, “The Digital Bibliography of Delaware is the fruition of the work of so many people and is a tribute to all who have been involved, both now and in the past, and to those people who would appreciate that such an important resource for the study of the First State and all of Delaware history and culture is now freely available online.”
