Library Offers Genealogy Workshops

The University of Delaware Library will present a workshop on Genealogy for Beginners and a workshop on Using Church and Cemetery Records during the 2010 Spring Semester.

Genealogy for Beginners:  This workshop covers the basics for researchers who are just starting to work on their family histories. It presents an overview of the types of records that contain genealogical information as well as research strategies for finding and recording this data. Participants will also learn how to search the online database Ancestry Library Edition for U.S. census records.

            Time:           Tuesday, April 20, 2010, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Location:      Library Instruction Room (116A), Morris Library, First Floor
Presenters:  Rebecca Knight, Associate Librarian, and Linda Stein, Librarian

Using Church and Cemetery Records in Genealogical Research:  Genealogy researchers can find valuable information in church and cemetery records. Some churches keep records of baptisms, burials, and marriages, which provide dates and family relationships. Tombstones and cemetery records often identify the names of family members and may reveal more than just the year and cause of death. This workshop covers the types of information included in these family documents and introduces Internet sites and resources in the University of Delaware collections that can help researchers locate them.

            Time:            Wednesday, May 5, 2010, 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Location:      Library Instruction Room (116A), Morris Library, First Floor
Presenters:  Rebecca Knight, Associate Librarian, and Linda Stein, Librarian
