Library Offers Workshops for Scientists and Engineers

The University of Delaware Library will present four workshops on specialized resources during the 2010 Winter Session.  These workshops will be especially tailored to the needs of researchers in engineering and the biosciences.

Knovel is a virtual technical library for reference data, including over 800 reference books and databases.   This powerful tool allows researchers to analyze and reorganize the data in these sources, and to sort, filter and export data from “live tables,” resolve equations and plot graphs, capture values from existing graphs, and perform “what if” experiments on the data.

    Time:               Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location:          Library Instruction Room (116A), Morris Library, First Floor
    Presenter:        Rich Garvin, Trainer, Knovel

SciFinder is the Web version of Chemical Abstracts.  SciFinder is the leading research tool used by scientists around the world. Scientists use SciFinder to access single- and multi-step reactions, experimental and predicted properties, and substance information.

    Time:               Tuesday, January 12, 2010, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location:          Library Instruction Room (116A), Morris Library, First Floor
Presenter:        Marie Sparks, Applications Specialist, CAS, American Chemical Society

Web of Science is a multidisciplinary index to journal literature.  It fully indexes over 6,650 major science journals across 150 scientific disciplines and includes all cited references captured from indexed articles.  Journal Citation Reports allows researchers to evaluate and compare journals using citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers.  A companion database, Journal Citation Reports, is the only source of citation data on journals, and includes virtually all areas of science, technology, and social sciences.  Journal Citation Reports helps researchers to identify the most frequently cited journals in a field, highest impact journals in a field, and largest journals in a field.

    Time:               Tuesday, January 26, 2010, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location:         Library Instruction Room (116A), Morris Library, First Floor
Presenter:       Tracy Matthews, MSLIS Customer Trainer, Healthcare & Science, Thompson Reuters

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows researchers to create a personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. These references can be used when writing papers, automatically formatting the paper and the bibliography in seconds. RefWorks is available from the Library databases page [].

    Time:               Tuesday, January 19, 2010, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location:         Library Instruction Room (116A), Morris Library, First Floor
    Presenter:       Cathy Wojewodzki, Librarian
                            Tom Melvin, Librarian

The workshops are available at no charge and are open to University of Delaware students, faculty, and staff.  Questions about the workshops may be sent to Cathy Wojewodzki, Librarian and Coordinator, Chemistry & Physics Libraries, via e-mail to or by calling 831-8085.
