On Saturday, November 26, 2005, the University of Delaware marked the 25th anniversary of its participation in the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Program. Thousands of people seeking information on patents and trademarks have received professional assistance from the University of Delaware Library because of the decision 25 years ago to become a part of this unique program. Today, even with the availability of patent and trademark information via the Internet, the PTDLP continues to serve a vital function in providing training and assistance to the members of our community.

The Patent Depository Library Program (it was changed to include trademarks in 1990) was initiated in 1871 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a means of providing printed patents to libraries for use by the public.

A large part of the mission of the Depository Library Program is supplying the member libraries with the resources needed to provide patrons with the information that they are looking for.

“I have been the representative to the PTDLP from the Morris Library for over sixteen years. I can say without a doubt that my responsibilities in this area have been among the most interesting and rewarding aspects of my job at this institution. I have served as a Regional Representative, Secretary, Vice President and President of the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Association … Whether it is helping someone track down a patent issued to their great grandfather, assisting a Ph.D. candidate in locating patents on their research topic, helping someone find a patent so that he can reproduce a part for a toilet at Fort Delaware (it happened!), or simply teaching someone how to perform a patent or trademark search, every person and inquiry is unique and interesting. The Morris Library should take pride in being a member of such a helpful and worthwhile program,” stated Thomas Melvin, Associate Librarian, Reference Department.

The University of Delaware Library celebrated the 25th anniversary on Monday, November 28, 2005, with Library staff.  Cutting the 25th anniversary cake are M. Dina Giambi, Assistant Director for Library Technical Services, and Thomas Melvin
