The University of Delaware Library implemented a pay-for-print model for printing from all 200 public computers in the Morris Library and at the branch libraries in Newark, Delaware, on August 4, 2009. A press release about the change was published in UDaily in May 2009.
The use of and associated costs for public printing in the Library have increased sharply and make this step necessary. Printing is also an environmental sustainability issue, and the current system of printing at no charge has resulted in unnecessary printing and waste. The change in policy is consistent with practice at other university libraries.
University of Delaware students, faculty and staff may use their University of Delaware ID card (UD1/FLEX card) to pay for printing in the Morris Library and branch library locations where printers are currently available. Value may be added to the card at the Student Multimedia Design Center desk or at the self-service “value transfer station” on the Lower Level of the Morris Library. The UD ID cards (UD1/FLEX cards) may be used for payment for many expenditures on campus in addition to printing.
More information from the University about other ways to deposit funds on UD1/FLEX cards is online at:
http://www.udel.edu/ud1flex/signUp.html
The print charges are consistent with other University of Delaware computing sites and are 4 cents per side for double-sided black & white printing, and 5 cents per page for single-sided printing. The default printer setting is double-sided printing. The price will remain consistent with University-wide prices in the future. University of Delaware students may also advantage of the existing University policy which provides a printing allocation of $5 for 100 free copies available beginning every January and July for printing from UD1/FLEX cards as part of printing policy. Printing from DELCAT, the library online catalog, continues to be at no charge. No card is required to print from DELCAT.
University of Delaware departments may obtain a department UD1/FLEX card through the UD1/FLEX Office, and arrange to add departmental funds to that card by contacting Kathy Phelps at the UD1/FLEX Office at [phelps@udel.edu] or 302-831-4033.
Library users may also, at no charge, save electronic items to portable USB drives or in some cases, email electronic articles. A color printer is available for UD students, faculty and staff for a fee in the Student Multimedia Design Center.
Members of the public without University of Delaware ID cards can pay for printing by purchasing a blank Library Copy Card for $1 at the Student Multimedia Design Center service desk on the Lower Level of the Morris Library. Value may then be added to the card at Student Multimedia Design Center service desk or at the self-service value transfer station on the Lower Level. Dispensers with $5 Library Copy Cards are on the first floor of the Morris Library. Dispensers hold $5 cards with a $4 print value because there is a charge of $1 for the blank card itself.
The Library Copy Card for community users includes a color photo of the Morris Library, and may also be used for community users to pay for Library photocopying. The current Library Copy Card replaced the older blue and white Library Copy Cards discontinued in August 2008.
