General Art Indexes

Art Abstracts/Art Index. 1929-.

This index to major American and foreign periodicals and museum bulletins covers the fields of art, archaeology, architecture, art history, arts and crafts, ceramics, decoration and ornament, graphic architecture, painting, and sculpture.
Répertoire d'Art et d'Archéologie (RAA). 1910-1989.

The primary indexing service for Western art, RAA provides more comprehensive coverage of European art than Art Index. About 1,700 periodicals are scanned for the index, which also includes books and exhibitions catalogs. Art and archaeology from 200 A.D. to the present are covered. Islamic, far Eastern, and primitive art are excluded. Now incorporated into and available online (1973-present) via BHA: Bibliography of the History of Art.
RILA: International Repertory of the Literature of Art. 1975-1989.

RILA is an index and abstrating service for current books, periodical articles, newspaper articles, Festschriften, congress reports, exhibition catalogs, museum publications, and dissertations in the field of post-Classical European and post-Columbian American art. Now incorporated into and available online via BHA: Bibliography of the History of Art.
BHA: Bibliography of the History of Art. 1991-.

In 1990, RILA and RAA combined into a new index, BHA. BHA covers the current literature of European art from late Antiquity to the present and American art from the European discoveries to the present. Visual arts in all media are included, as well as the decorative and applied arts including popular art, folk art, and all objects of materials culture that are of interest to the art historian. Books, periodical articles, conference proceedings, Festschriften and other collected essays, exhibition catalogues, selected art dealers' catalogues, doctoral dissertations, and microform publications are included.
Index to Art Periodicals. 1907-1970.

Work on this index began in 1907, and, in 1929, with the creation of Art Index, its emphasis gradually switched to more in-depth indexing of museum bulletins and foreign periodicals. Thus it both antedates and complements the Art Index. It is in index to articles from about 350 periodicals with emphasis on 19th and 20th century painting, decorative arts, Oriental art, and Chicago architecture. Compiled at the Ryerson Library of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Original Index to Art Periodicals. 1850's-1960
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref N1 .A1 F74 1983)
Indexes 27 major art journals from the United States, Great Britain, France, and Italy. Emphasis is on Western European and American painting, drawing, sculpture, and some decorative arts from the fourth century A.D. to 1860. Important because it pre-dates the Art Index. Compiled at the Frick Art Reference Library.
ArtBibliographies Modern. 1969-1996.

Abstracts of the current literature of modern art, photography, and design. Subject coverage starts at 1900 but, depending on the topic, may go back into the late 19th century. Indexes and abstracts articles from 300 core journals, books, exhibition catalogues, dissertations, and essays in books or exhibition catalogues.

American Art

Arts in America: A Bibliography. 1800-mid-1970s.

A comprehensive, annotated bibliography of American art published in 4 volumes for the Archives of American Art in 1979 as part of the bicentennial celebration.
Index to Nineteenth Century American Art Periodicals. 19th-century.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref N6510 .S376x 1999)
Published in 1999, this is an author, subject, and table-of-contents index to 40+ American art journals published during the 19th century.

Anthropology

Anthropology Plus. Late 19th-century -.
LOCATION: Library Databases
Anthropology Plus provides citations to articles and essays on anthropology and archaeology, including art history, demography, economics, psychology, and religious studies.

Architecture

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals.
LOCATION: Library Databases (1930-)
An index to more than 1,000 journals published worldwide on architecture, architects, archaeology, decorative arts, interior design, furniture, landscape architecture, city planning, housing, and historic preservation. The indexing began in the 1930's, with some periodicals indexed retrospectively back to the 1860's.
Architectural Index. 1959-1999.

Covers about a dozen basic architecture periodicals.
Burnham Index to Architectural Literature. 1919-mid-1960's.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref NA705 .B87 1989)
Indexes 600 selected monographs and more than 150 journals covering the field of architecture. The indexing of the journals and monographs often goes back into the 19th century. 75% of journals included are not indexed elsewhere. Compiled at the Burnham Library of Architecture of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Decorative Arts

Catalog of Periodical Articles: Decorative and Fine Arts. 1840's-1972.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref N1 .A1B P36)
An index to over 350 periodicals in the field of the decorative arts. Important because other indexes (i.e., Art Index and RAA) are weak in the area of decorative arts.

Design and Applied Arts

Design & Applied Arts Index. 1988-.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref NK1160 .D45)
An international index to current design and design-related journals. Includes such fields as industrial design, vehicle design, environmental design, computer aided design, graphic design, typography, book design, advertising, packaging, and much more.

Museum Studies

Museology Bibliography (BMUSE). 1900-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
"Referenced material includes over 25,000 journals, journal articles, books, and reports published from 1900 to the present. The database will be expanded to include material from other international repositories of museological literature."

Preservation and Conservation

Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts. 1700-.

The primary index for art conservation. "The sources cited deal specifically with the technical examination, investigation, analysis, restoration, preservation, and technical documentation or works of art and monuments having historic or artistic significance." Includes a wide range of resources including publications which describe techniques applicable to the treatment of art works and technological literature that reports data on the physical and chemical properties of substances that relate to artistic works and/or their treatment, repair, and preservation.
Conservation Information Network (BCIN). 1700-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
The principal online database for art conservation. A great deal of conservation literature is referenced, including the Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts (prior to 1998), technical reports, conference proceedings, journal articles, books and audiovisual and unpublished materials. The database also includes previously unavailable material from private sources, as well as new information gathered by a worldwide network of contributors.
Index to Historic Preservation Periodicals. 1979-1990.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref Z1251 .A2 N37x 1988 and Suppl. 1992)
An index to periodicals, pamphlets, and clippings representing the full spectrum of historic preservation topics. Periodicals issued by international, national, regional, state, and local hsitoric preservation organizations are included. Popular and scholarly serials that include material bearing on the historic preservation movement are also included. Compiled by the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library of the University of Maryland, College Park.
