General Indexes

These general indexes cover various time periods from the late eighteenth century to the present. Some cover virtually all disciplines - humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Others, such as Periodicals Index Online, cover disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Other indexes listed here cover only topics in the arts and humanities. All of these indexes could be useful for researching a topic in art history.

Retrospective (pre-1900) Coverage

Periodicals Index Online. 1665-1995.

An electronic index to the contents of thousands of journals and magazines in the humanities and social sciences, from their first issues to 1995. A unique source for the time period and subject areas covered.
Nineteenth Century Masterfile. 19th and early 20th centuries.
LOCATION: Library Databases
Nineteenth Century Masterfile describes itself as "the digital index of the nineteenth century." The primary component is an online version of W.F. Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1906 (see listing below). Nineteenth Century Masterfile enhances this by adding dozens of indices to periodicals, books, newspapers, and government documents.

An important index because it covers American and English periodicals of the 19th century. Now incorporated into and available online via Nineteenth Century Masterfile.
19th Century Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature. 1890-1899.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref AI3 .R479)
Originally intended as a project to cover the whole 19th century, but only 2 volumes were published which cover the last decade of the 19th century. Still a useful resource. It covers different periodicals than Poole's Index does. Now incorporated into and available online via Readers' Guide Retrospective  About Get It!.

Twentieth-century Coverage

Readers' Guide Retrospective. 1890-1982.

The most basic and general index to U.S. periodicals, including periodicals which are broad, general, popular, and non-technical. It remains useful because it covers some of the most important cultural periodicals for the first half of the twentieth century.
Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature. 1900-.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref AI3 .R48) Index Table
The most basic and general index to U.S. periodicals, including periodicals which are broad, general, popular, and non-technical. It remains useful because it covers some of the most important cultural periodicals for the first half of the twentieth century. Humanities & Social Sciences Retrospective. 1907-1984.
LOCATION: Library Databases (1907-1984)
This database covers some of the best-known scholarly journals and numerous lesser-known but important specialized magazines from a wide range of interdisciplinary fields in the social sciences and humanities. The journals covered are generally English-language; in its earlier years, some foreign titles were included.

Despite its many title changes, this remained a basic, general index to British and American periodicals. Originally intended as an index to scholarly journals which would supplement and compliment The Readers' Guide. In its earlier years, some foreign titles were also included. Now incorporated into and available online (1907-1984) via Humanities & Social Sciences Retrospective.
Essay and General Literature Index. 1900-.

An unusual publication which indexes the contents of books, primarily collections of essays. The material indexed here is often unfindable except through this index.
British Humanities Index. 1962-1996.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref AI3 .S922)
Previous title: Subject Index to Periodicals. 1915-1961 (Ref AI3 .S92). Indexes about 400 British journals in the arts and humanities. It includes many local and regional periodicals dealing with history, archaeology, culture, etc.
American Humanities Index. 1975-.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref AI3 .A278)
An index to scholarly, critical, and "little" magazines. Specifically attempts to index periodicals which are not indexed elsewhere.
Arts and Humanities Citation Index. 1975-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
Known as Web of Science in its online version. A multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. It indexes 1,100 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals. This is an unusual source which approaches the concept of indexing from a very different point of view than other indexes.
Expanded Academic ASAP Plus. 1980-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
Covers 1,500 general interest magazines and journals in the humanities, social sciences, and general sciences. Includes virtually all the periodicals and journals currently indexed by The Readers' Guide and Humanities Index.

The Ancient World

L'Annee Philologique. 1924-.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref PA29 .A44)
The most important index and bibliography for publications dealing with all aspects of life and society in the Greco-Roman world. Published annually.
Anthropology Plus. Late 19th-century -.
LOCATION: Library Databases
Anthropology Plus provides citations to articles and essays on anthropology and archaeology, including art history, demography, economics, psychology, and religious studies.
Tables of Contents of Interest to Classicists - TOCS-IN. 1992-.
LOCATION: Internet (http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/amphoras/tocs.html)
"TOCS-IN archives the tables of contents of over 180 journals of interest to classicists. There are over 80 volunteers from 16 countries who supply TOCS-IN with the majority of the tocs in the archive." The article titles are fully searchable.

The Middle Ages and Renaissance

International Medieval Bibliography. 1967-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
A bibliography on all aspects of medieval studies from A.D. 450-1500. The geographical range is the continent of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Included are articles, review articles, scholarly notes and similar literature from journals and miscellanies.
Iter: Gateway to the Middle Ages and Renaissance. 1843-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
The Journals Database is a bibliography of approximately 250,000 articles and reviews drawn from over 400 medieval and Renaissance journal titles, covering A.D. 400-1700. The Books Database (under construction) is a bibliography of monographs, material published in monographs, and collected essays pertaining to the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

History

America: History and Life. 1954-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
An index and abstracts of journal articles, reviews, and dissertations published throughout the world on the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present.
Historical Abstracts. 1955-.
LOCATION: Library Databases
A sister publication to America: History and Life, Historical Abstracts indexes and abstracts journal articles, reviews, and dissertations in world history and culture (excluding the United States and Canada).
