• Academic OneFile  
  An online database which provides references and/or abstracts to articles from more than 8,000 scholarly and general interest periodicals. It also provides the full text of many articles, as well as podcasts and transcripts from NPR and CNN.
• Black Studies Center
  This site provides historical and current material for researching the past, present and future of African Americans, the wider African Diaspora, and Africa itself. It is comprised of several cross-searchable component databases including the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), the Chicago Defender (1910-1975), ProQuest Dissertations for Black Studies, and the Black Literature Index.
• Biography Resource Center
  An online encyclopedia of biographical information on people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas.
• CQ Researcher Plus Archive
  A database of in-depth reports that explore a single “hot” issue in the news each week. Topics range from social issues, such as affirmative action, black colleges, and race in America, to environment, health, education, and science and technology.
• General OneFile 
  An online database which provides references and/or abstracts to articles from more than 3,000 full-text general interest, popular periodicals. It also provides New York Times articles from 1995 to the present as well as audio files and transcripts of National Public Radio (NPR) programs from 1990 to the present.
• LexisNexis Academic
  Contains the complete text of several major newspapers published in the United States since the 1970s. Included are the New York Times and the Washington Post.
• LexisNexis Statistical
  A database comprised of statistical tables (“Tables Research Edition”) and references to other statistical sources. To limit results to statistics that are broken down by race, select “By Race and Ethnic Group” as a search category.
• Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
  A database that provides a one-stop source for information on controversial social issues. Included are viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to Web sites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles.

• African American Newspapers: The 19th Century
  Contains the complete text of several major African-American newspapers published in the United States during the 19th century.
• Black Drama
  Contains the full text of more than 1,000 plays written by playwrights from North America, Africa, the Caribbean, and other Africans in the diaspora. The database also provides production information, and related details on theaters, production companies, and more. Also included are playbills, production photographs and other ephemera related to the plays.
• Black Studies Center
  This site provides historical and current material for researching the past, present and future of African Americans, the wider African Diaspora, and Africa itself. It is comprised of several cross-searchable component databases including the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), the Chicago Defender (1910-1975), ProQuest Dissertations for Black Studies, and the Black Literature Index.
• Black Thought and Culture: African Americans to 1975
  A database containing full-text monographs, essays, articles, speeches, and interviews written by leaders within the black community from the earliest times to 1975.
• Caribbean Literature
  A searchable collection of literary works produced in the Caribbean region during the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the titles are numerous rare and hard-to-find works written in English, French, Spanish, Dutch, and various Creole languages.
• Ethnic NewsWatch
  A full text database of current newspapers, magazines, and journals of African American and other ethnic presses.
• International Index to Black Periodicals Full Text
  Full-text coverage of 25 core Black Studies periodicals (1998 to the present), along with indexing and abstracting for over 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers, and newsletters from the United States, Africa and the Caribbean (1902 to the present).
• Literature Online
  This site provides access to African-American Poetry (1750-1900) and Twentieth Century African-American Poetry (1901-1998), two databases which provide the complete text of thousands of poems by African American authors.

There are many databases that are useful for the study of various aspects of African American Studies. The following are the ones most frequently consulted, but researchers should also consult the Library Databases page to determine whether there are other discipline-specific databases that are suitable for their given research topic. For example, researchers pursuing topics related to African American health care could also consult nursing (CINAHL) and medical (MEDLINE) databases.
