Getting Started

Information on African American art and artists is abundantly available in the Morris Library, although finding information on lesser-known artists will require considerable research. This select bibliography can be used to identify online information, books, newspaper and periodical articles, and encyclopedia entries on this topic. A few good starting points are:

An online database which provides references and/or abstracts to articles from more than 8,000 scholarly and general interest periodicals. It also provides the full text of many articles.
African American Visual Artists Database

An online database of artists of the African Diaspora and Africa who have lived, worked, studied or exhibited in the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean. The database contains bibiographical references to books, parts of books, journals, and exhibition catalogues.
Art Abstracts/Art Index  About Get It!

This index to major American and foreign periodicals and museum bulletins (1929-present) covers the fields of art, archaeology, architecture, art history, arts and crafts, ceramics, decoration and ornament, graphic architecture, painting, and sculpture.

Biography Resource Center  About Get It!
LOCATION: Library Databases
A comprehensive database of biographical information on more than one million people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. The database includes entries from the following directories, which are also available in print: Contemporary Black Biography, Notable Black American Men, Notable Black American Women, the St. James Guide to Black Artists, and Who's Who Among African Americans.
Black Studies Center

Black Studies Center contains essential historical and current material for researching African Americans, the wider African Diaspora, and Africa itself. It is comprised of several cross-searchable component databases: Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, which features essays on various interdisciplinary topics written by leading academic experts; the International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), which indexes current and retrospective Black Studies journals and newsletters and provides full-text coverage of core periodicals; the full-text backfile, from 1910 to 1975, of the Chicago Defender; ProQuest Dissertations for Black Studies, which contains a thousand doctoral dissertations and Masters’ theses in Black Studies; and the Black Literature Index, an index to the Black Literature microfiche collection which references 70,000 bibliographic citations for fiction, poetry and literary reviews published in 110 black periodicals and newspapers between 1827-1940.

The University of Delaware online catalog includes entries for books, journals, databases, and other research materials in the University of Delaware Library. Search DELCAT using subject keywords such as: African American art, African American artists, African American printmakers, African American sculptors, or the name of an individual artist (e.g. Romare Bearden).

ARTstor

The ARTstor Digital Library contains thousands of images of visual material from different cultures and disciplines. One of the distinct collections within ARTstor is the Image of the Black in Western Art, a project that examines how people of African descent have been represented in Western art. Other collections within ARTstor also contain images of African American art.
Oxford Art Online
LOCATION: Library Databases
A comprehensive dictionary of art and artists. It provides Web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols.) with constant additions of new material and updates to the text, as well as extensive image links. It also includes entries from The Oxford Companion to Western Art (ed. Hugh Brigstocke, 2001). A brief guide to African American Art is available within the database.

Newspaper Articles

Newspapers are excellent sources of information on artists and their work. Below are a few indexes which can help you locate information on artists and exhibitions as reported by the local media. Often newspaper sources can help researchers learn of museums that hold a particular artist's work. Additional indexes are available in the Reference Department.

A comprehensive, full-text database of the newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic press. It provides a rich collection of articles, editorials, and reviews with a broad diversity of perspectives often at variance with the mainstream media. Coverage is from 1960 to the present.
International Index to Black Periodicals Full Text
LOCATION: Library Databases
Full-text of the Chicago Defender newspaper (1910-1975) and 40 core Black Studies periodicals (1998 to the present), along with indexing and abstracting for over 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers, and newsletters from the United States, Africa and the Caribbean (1902 to the present).
LexisNexis Academic
LOCATION: Library Databases
LexisNexis Academic provides full-text information from major U.S. and world newspapers, news wire services, television and radio broadcast transcripts, and blogs. The materials contained in the database are date from the 1970s to the present.

Black Biography, 1790-1950: A Cumulative Index. Alexandria, Va.: Chadwyck-Healey, 1991.
LOCATION : Morris Library - Reference (Ref E185 .96 .B53X 1991)
A three-volume index to a collection of historical black biographical dictionaries published on 1,044 microfiche (Micro No. 1974). In addition to providing brief biographical information on the individual, the index also provides geographical and occupational indexes.
Black Thought and Culture: African Americans to 1975
LOCATION: Library Databases
A full-text database of selected books, journals and newspapers pertaining to African American history and culture. It contains issues of the publication Artist and Influence, which is a good source for interviews with African American artists.
JSTOR

JSTOR is a database of back issues of core journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. For more recent issues of JSTOR journals, check the Library's Electronic Journals.

A five-volume index to newspaper and periodical articles, books and ephemera held in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The volumes have entries listed under an individual's name, organization, or subject area.
Palmer, Colin A. Encyclopedia of African American Culture and History. 6 vols. Detroit: Macmillan Reference USA, 2006.

A six volume set which contains scholarly essays written on various topics pertaining to African American studies. The signed essays are written by experts in the field and provide references to additional sources. There is a general index, along with numerous appendices which provide historical statistics and other useful information.
Periodicals Index Online  About Get It!

An online index to the contents of thousands of journals and magazines in the humanities and social sciences, from their first issues to 1995. The scope is international. Every article is indexed and some citations are linked to the full text in JSTOR.

The Clipping File is also available on microfiche in the Morris Library (Microfiche No. 1583). The index provides access to individual names, organizations, and subjects.
WorldCat [WorldCat.org interface]

This database describes resources held in other libraries. WorldCat, the OCLC union catalog, contains cataloging records for books, computer data files, computer programs, films, journals, magazines, manuscripts, musical scores, newspapers, slides, sound recordings, and videotapes. It does not generally include individual articles in journals, magazines, or newspapers.
