1990 Census of Population and Housing Publications:

A Research Guide

Contents: Choosing Census Publications | Census Questionnaire | Census Publications | State Data Centers in Delaware

Choosing Census Publications

  1. Identify the subjects you need from the questions asked on the Census questionnaire:
100% (complete count / short form) or sample data (long form).
  2. Choose the levels of geography you want: e.g., United States, regions, states, counties, places (includes cities), or smaller geographic areas, such as census tracts, blocks or zip codes.
NOTE: as a general rule, there are fewer data items available for the smaller places, such as blocks.
  3. Choose the census publications which match your needs.
NOTE: the same subjects may be listed in several reports; sometimes the way the data are presented differs. Try more than one.

Census Questionnaire

Census Questionnaire – Sample Data

NOTE: the sample questions (long form) also included complete count (100%; short form) questions. If area of interest is a complete count subject, such as age, race or tenure, it is better to use 100% data. This is true even though those same subjects appear in reports with data from the sample only.

Sample Data are estimates; users should not regard estimates as if they were counts.
