Finding Books Using DELCAT

Use DELCAT, the library's online catalog, to search for books, journal titles, media, and other materials in the Library's collections. DELCAT may be searched by author, title, Library of Congress subject heading, keyword(s) and call number.

Finding Articles Using Databases

Use the following databases indexes to find items such as journal articles, dissertations, ERIC documents, etc. The complete selection of Library databases is available on the Library databases page.

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center)
ERIC is the premier U.S. national bibliographic database of education literature. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, ERIC consists of two files: Resources in Education, covering unpublished, document literature; and Current Index to Journals in Education, covering published journal literature. ERIC contains some full-text articles. Abstracts (summaries) are provided for each reference. Covers 1966-present. ERIC documents published prior to 1966 are available on microfiche in the Microforms area on the lower level of the Library in cabinets with microfiche number S107. These documents cannot be searched individually in DELCAT; however a search for "Eric Documents" or "Eric Reports" will provide information on the microform set as a whole.

Education Full Text
This database is an electronic index to the 427 periodicals included in Education Index. It also includes the full text of more than 133 of the most important education journals from 1996 forward. Covers 1983 - present.

PsycINFO
Electronic index which lists articles with abstracts published in psychology journals and chapters in books. Useful for topics relating to educational psychology, special education, counseling, student mood and motivation, etc. Covers 1806 to the present.

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses
Electronic index which lists dissertations published at universities throughout the country and some foreign universities. Coverage is 1861 to the present. Dissertations & Theses @ University of Delaware is a subset of ProQuest Dissertations & Theses and includes only University of Delaware dissertations and theses. It contains the full text of University of Delaware dissertations and theses from 1948 to the present.
Sociological Abstracts
Electronic index which covers articles on sociology and related fields. Coverage is from 1952 to the present.
Academic OneFile
Comprehensive database of more than 8,000 journals covering the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature, and other subjects. Covers from 1980 to the present.
Lexis-Nexis Academic
A full-text database which provides complete, full-text articles from newspapers, magazines, and other sources. Updated daily. Coverage varies.
Web of Science
A huge, multidisciplinary database corresponding to Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index, published by the Institute for Scientific Information. Provides access to a wealth of scholarly journal literature from more than 8000 scholarly journals. Web of Science provides unique citation searching tools that can be used to discover seminal articles on a topic. This database does not contain full-text articles, though abstracts are included. Coverage varies.

Locating Articles in the Library

For articles that are not available in full text, use DELCAT to find call numbers and locations for the journals which contain these articles. You may search for an exact journal title (International Journal of Educational Research) or for keywords in the title (Reading Research). But you cannot look up individual articles by author or title in DELCAT. Please note: if you cannot find a journal title in DELCAT, the Library may not subscribe to it. Ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.

DELCAT records for magazines and journals are identified by the format designation SERIAL, to distinguish them from books with the same title. Once you have located the DELCAT record for your journal, click on the "Holdings" link to find out what volumes and years the Library has. If more than one location is listed, check each one to determine where the issue you need can be found.

Electronic Access to Library Resources

The University of Delaware Library provides a variety of electronic information resources. Most of these sources are accessible to University students, faculty, and staff via the Library's Web site. University students, faculty, and staff can access University of Delaware Library's electronic resources from off-campus by logging in to these resources using a valid UDel NetID and password. If you have logged in, yet still experience difficulty accessing electronic resources, call the Reference Desk at (302) 831-2965.

Interlibrary Loan

University of Delaware students, faculty, and staff may obtain books and journal articles not owned by the Library through the Library's Interlibrary Loan Service. The first time this service is accessed, you will need to create an Interlibrary Loan account using your UDel NetID and password. Articles requested will be delivered electronically to this account within about 2 business days. Books requested will be delivered to the Interlibrary Loan office on the first floor of the Morris Library. It can take up to two weeks to receive books requested via Interlibrary Loan, as books must be delivered through the mail.
