Periodical Articles

Search for periodical articles to supplement your search for books on DELCAT. The University of Delaware Library subscribes to many databases and their use is licensed to the Unversity of Delaware community only. You will not find these resources through a Google or Yahoo search on the World Wide Web, because they are part of the “invisible,” “deep,” or “hidden” Web.

WorldCat Local provides access to some periodical articles, but also check these databases:

  • Historical Abstracts
Begin a search of the secondary literature here. Some links to full text of articles at JSTOR and at other sites.
  • Academic OneFile
  • Humanites & Social Sciences Index Retrospective
Use to track down articles published in journals. (Compare with Readers’ Guide Retrospective.)
  • JSTOR

  • Periodicals Index Online
Index to the contents of nearly 4,000 journals and magazines in the humanities and social sciences, from their first issues up to 1995, with links to the full text of some articles.
  • Readers’ Guide Retrospective

Check Databases for History for a more comprehensive list of licensed electronic resources for historians.

“As anyone who has done it knows, real research loops back and forth, moving forward a step or two, going back while at the same time anticipating stages not yet begun, then moving forward again.”—Wayne C. Booth, et al., The Craft of Research (Chicago, 1995)

“Research is the process of going up alleys to see if they are blind.”—Marston Bates
