“As anyone who has done it knows, real research loops back and forth, moving forward a step or two, going back while at the same time anticipating stages not yet begun, then moving forward again.”—Wayne C. Booth, et al., The Craft of Research (Chicago, 1995)

“Research is the process of going up alleys to see if they are blind.”—Marston Bates

Reference Resources

When starting a research project, it is often a good idea to check the Reference collection to find background information on your topic. Resources typically found include dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, and statistical materials. Here are some:

WorldCat Local and DELCAT

Articles (in Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers)

Search for articles to supplement your search for books on DELCAT and WorldCat Local. Your starting point for tracking down articles will be in Databases to which the University of Delaware Library subscribes. You will not find most of these resources through a Google search on the Internet.

Check Databases for History for a more comprehensive list of licensed electronic resources for historians.
