Thousands of sources in the Library and on the Internet may contain biographical information. This guide provides citations or links to many of them. By using some recommended search strategies on DELCAT you should be able to ferret out additional sources not listed here.
Determining the appropriate biographical source involves first asking yourself three questions. These are:
Depending on your answer to the first question, proceed either to the section in this guide covering biographical sources which are retrospective or general in scope (these include persons of all historical periods, including the present, or those who are dead) or to the section covering sources which are contemporary in scope (these include only living persons). Upon arriving at your jumping-off point, be prepared to ask yourself the second and third questions.
These sources either do not include or are not restricted to living persons.
There are three main categories of sources, depending on whether the scope is universal and inclusive, is confined to persons in a particular country or region, or includes only persons of a particular gender, occupation, profession, or area of achievement.

These sources provide biographical information about living persons.
For some of the serial publications that follow (i.e., titles that are published yearly or at some other regular interval), the Library may have an extensive backfile. Therefore, those titles may be regarded as retrospective sources as well. In general, the current edition is shelved in the Reference Room, and the older editions are shelved in the Stacks.
Just as for retrospective or general biographical sources, there are three main categoies, depending on whether the scope is universal and inclusive, is confined to persons in a particular country or region, or includes only persons of a particular gender, occupation, profession, or area of achievement.

Each entry surveys biographies that have been written on an individual. The Guide provides bibliographical and critical analysis of published biographies, not the biographical information itself.
The Library of Congress classification system, which is used in DELCAT, has several pertinent headings and subheadings that enable you to identify biographical sources. The most relevant of these is “Biography,” but “Autobiography” or “Autobiographies,” “Bio-Bibliography,” “Interviews,” “Obituaries,” and “Personal Narratives” may also be productive in some cases.
The subheadings “Epitaphs” and “Genealogy” are marginal.
Compilations of biographical sketches are often cataloged with “Dictionaries” as a subheading (e.g., United States—Biography—Dictionaries).
Library of Congress does not use the subject heading “oral history.” A bibliographic record for the oral history of a particular person is likely to have several subject headings, neither of which are “oral history” (e.g., David Berger's Bassically Speaking: An Oral History of George Duvidier has the subject headings “Duvidier, George” and “Jazz musicians—United States—Biography”). To retrieve materials on this topic, do a keyword search on the phrase oral history (“words adjacent”) in title or better yet anywhere. The phrase “oral history” might be buried in the notes for a bibliographic record.
Works that have been assigned a subject heading where “Biography” is the first element are about the writing of biographies or collections of biographical essays, not the biography of a particular person or groups of persons. Generally, in order to retrieve the biography of a particular person or groups of persons, you must formulate a search where “biography” is a subheading (subject subdivision). Often the “biography” subheading is used in conjunction with geographic, chronological, or other subject subheadings.
The subheading “biography” may be applied to names of countries, cities, etc.; names of literary authors and corporate bodies; titles of sacred works; and under classes of persons, ethnic groups, individual animals and groups of animals, and historic events. Note that the subheading “biography” is not applied to non-literary figures. For biographical material about non-literary figures, do a subject search on the person’s name without the subheading “biography.”
Here are some examples:
Names of Countries, Cities, Etc.
united states—biography
philadelphia pa—biography
middle atlantic states—biography
Names of Literary Authors and Corporate Bodies
poe edgar allen 1809-1849—biography
catholic church—ireland—bishops—biography
earhart amelia 1897-1937 [not a literary author]
Titles of Sacred Works
bible—biography
talmud—biography
Classes of Persons, Ethnic Groups, Individual Animals and Groups of Animals, and Historic Events
air pilots—united states—biography
hispanic americans—biography
lions—kenya—biography
united states—history—civil war 1861-1865—biography
“Autobiography” (singular) as a subject heading groups together works about the history and technique of autobiographical writing. The subject heading “Autobiographies” (plural) applies to collections of autobiographies, and may be followed by a subheading Referring to classes of persons, such as “Women authors.”
The Library of Congress does not apply the subheading “Autobiography” after names of countries, literary authors, sacred works, and classes of persons, as might be expected, to parallel the application of the subheading “Biography.” Indeed, the use of the subject heading “Autobiography” often automatically triggers an additional subject heading which includes “Biography” as a subheading. Two examples are: “Autobiography—Afro-American authors” and “Slaves—United States—Biography—History and Criticism” as two of the subject headings for Frances Smith Foster's Witnessing Slavery: The Development of Ante-Bellum Slave Narratives, and “Autobiography—Men authors” and “Men authors, English—Biography—History and Criticism” for Martin A. Danahy's A Community of One: Masculine Autobiography and Autonomy in Nineteenth-Century Britain.
Either a bibliography of a person’s works with additional biographical information, or a biography which includes a bibliography of the biographee's works. The scope and application of “Bio-bibliography” as a subject heading or subheading parallel that of “Biography.”
A subject subdivision used under names of individual persons and under classes of persons and ethnic groups.

A subject subdivision under individual events and wars (e.g., World War, 1939-1945—Personal narratives).
Epitaphs, whether inscriptions on tombstones or literary commemorations of a deceased person, may include biographical information. The subject heading “Epitaphs” covers both senses.
The subheading “Genealogy” may occur after names of countries, cities, etc.; names of individual corporate bodies; classes of persons and ethnic groups; and names of individual families.
This system of assigning subject headings to bibliographic records has been used in cataloging at the Library of Congress since 1898 and by many other libraries, including the University of Delaware Library. The current edition of Library of Congress Subject Headings, the twenty-second (1999), contains headings established by the Library of Congress. It provides examples of the use of subject headings, scope notes (definitions) for some subject headings, and references to related, broader, and narrower terms. Copies of Library of Congress Subject Headings, in large red volumes, are located by DELCAT computers in the Morris Library and should be consulted for optimal searching by subject. In some cases, DELCAT provides scope notes for subject headings and “see” and “see also” references to preferred and related subject headings.
