Map Libraries
Map libraries have organized Internet resources for ease of use, including bibliographies, digitized maps, aerial photographs, elevation models, and remote sensing images. Some libraries make local data available through their home pages, so it is worth checking several library sites for information.
- Oddens’s bookmarks
A comprehensive listing of maps and map-related sites. Maintained by Roelof Oddens at the University of Utrecht, this site is
a good starting point and contains over 22000 links to maps, atlases, map libraries, cartography sites and related materials.
- Bodleian Library Map Room
The Bodleian Library is the main research library of the University of Oxford. The site includes
the map case, a collection of digitized historic maps.
- Broer Map Library
Although the site includes maps scanned and saved on their server, the Broer Map Library historic map index is a one of a kind search engine pointing to digitized maps which may be held elsewhere.

Not to be confused with the map dealer of the same name, this library site includes a special catalogue of maps of Switzerland.
Interactive Mapping
There are many online services which allow the creation of maps. For this page, “Interactive Mapping” includes sites which allow maps to be displayed or generated from the most current information. While every map is a snapshot reflecting conditions at a particular time, this page links to maps which may be more current than those in the Digitized Maps section.
Most interactive maps are for the United States and Canada due to liberal copyright rules, but such services are available for other countries as well. For countries other than the ones listed below, browse in the Map Libraries, above, some of which include lists of Interactive Mapping Sites.
Worldwide coverage
- Coastline Extractor
Using an electronic form, this NOAA site allows extraction of coastline segments bounded by a specified latitude/longitude
range and plots the coast extracted. Data sets may also be exported in MATLAB and Arc Ungenerate format (works with Arc/Info,
and can be converted to a Shape file that ArcView can read). Tools make it possible to convert data to MapInfo format.
Created by Rich Signell of the U.S. Geological Survey, this tool is now part of a suite of pages at NOAA’s
Shoreline / Coastline Data page.
- Google Earth
A version of Google Earth is free for personal use, but must be downloaded and installed.
- Google Maps
Browsable maps and images of the Earth. Views include Map, Satellite, and Terrain (shaded relief).
- Landsat images (GeoCover data)
Produced, under NASA contract, by Earth Satellite Corporation for NASA's Earth Science Enterprise Scientific Data Purchase
Program, this site serves up Landsat images using MrSid software.
- Map24
While the UK site is limited to Western European countries, the Swiss version links
to maps of Australia, South America, South Africa, and selected countries in the Middle East. Users may zoom to street level with a few clicks and read
information on restaurants, parking locations, and cultural sites for some areas. North America has a site,
as do and Southern Africa and Brazil.
- MSN Maps & Directions (absorbed MapBlast!)
Produce a map to order of streets in the United States and selected other areas. Includes basic maps of many European cities.
- WikiMapia
A Web 2.0 project to describe the whole planet Earth. Created by Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev,
inspired by Google maps and Wikipedia, it gives Google Earth-like functionality without requiring special software.
- NASA World Wind
World Wind software is free but must be downloaded and installed. According to the site, the software “lets you zoom
from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission
data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there.”

- Multimap.com — “Online Maps to Everywhere”
This site offers free street-level maps of the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. Australia and World areas are
are also included, but coverage may be limited to small scale maps only. Scales vary with location. Ordnance Survey data and maps are protected by Crown copyright.
- Map24
Map24 offer road and street maps of many parts of the world, including
Europe and Iceland.
- Maps of Railway-Networks
Designed for trainspotters, this site features maps of European railway lines.

- IPUMS Homepage
Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) is Census microdata for social and economic research. Made available by the
Minnesota Population Center (MPC) of the University of Minnesota.
- Social Explorer
Based at Queens College of the City University of New York, their objective is to help visually analyze and understand the
demography of the U.S. through the use of interactive maps and data reports. Primary functions include Demographic Data
Analysis, Interactive Map/Report Design and Software Development. Their main goal is to visually display the demographic
change that has occurred in the U.S. since 1790 through the present from the county level up to national level data.
- US-Mex DDViewer 3.1
An interactive application that provides rapid, interactive data mapping, viewing, and analysis of more than 200
socioeconomic variables that are congruent between the United States and Mexico. May be used for browsing and visualizing
patterns at geographic levels ranging from regions to counties/municipios or to map population, vital statistic, land area,
and household data.

“This site features digital copies of 113 antique maps of Africa and accompanying text dating from the mid 16th Century to the early 20th Century. All scanned maps are authentic and originally collected by the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies (or the Africana Library) at Northwestern University.”

This collection is part of ‘History’, the web site of the Institute of Historical Research, London, and maintained by Tony Campbell. It has a companion page,

- Boundaries of the United States and the Several States
From United States Geological Survey Bulletin 1212, the animated map displays boundary changes of the United States from 1650 to 1950.
- Cartes historiques canadiennes (1901)

- Canada at Scale
An online exhibit with many antique map images, by the National Archives of Canada.
- Mapoteca do Corpus Territorial do Sul
Campo Arqueológico de Tavira (a non-profit archaeological association of South Portugal) presents on its site
a digital version of the 1634 O atlas de Pedro Texeira
(depicting the Portuguese coast and territory). The site includes other images of maps of Portugal published between 1579
and c. 1870.
- Electronic Cultural Atlas Iniative
The ECAI digital atlas is a globally federated collection of hundreds of networked digital projects created by libraries, museums and archives, and by scholars in history, the humanities and the social sciences. They are linked together through a metadata clearinghouse and visualized on a GIS viewer. Approximately three hundred affiliated projects are visible in a Project List.
- David Rumsey Historical Map Collection
Focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America cartographic history materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented.
- Federation of East
European Family History Societies
The fifty maps here cover all of Central and Eastern Europe, Siberia and Asian Russia in 1882: the Austrian, German and Russian Empires, Balkans, Finland and Greece. Most of the maps at this site were scanned in from the Comprehensive Atlas and Geography of the World published in 1882 by Blackie
& Sons of Edinburgh, Scotland.
- Historic Maps in K-12 Classrooms
“This resource for K-12 teachers and students developed by the Hermon Dunlap Smith
Center for the History of Cartography at the Newberry Library is designed to bring
historically significant map documents into your classroom. Inside are high quality
images of historic map documents that illustrate the geographical dimensions of

- Historical Atlas of Canada Online Learning Project
The Historical Atlas of Canada project published three volumes which explored major themes and episodes in the history of
Canada using maps, text and graphics. Now, the Online Learning Project makes many of the maps and much of the research data
created for the Atlas available online.
- Historical Map and Chart Collection
This Office of Coast Survey site provides links to gif and tiff images of older charts produced by the Survey. Gif images may be viewed online while tiff images may be downloaded.

- Maps of Delaware
The Historic Map Collection of the University of Delaware Libraries Special Collections Department comprises over 800
published maps dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries.

Map Collection at the Hargrett Library
The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia
maintains a collection of more than 800 historical maps spanning nearly
500 years, from the sixteenth century through the early twentieth century.
Only 20% of the map holdings are currently represented in the digital library.

The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA) and the U.S. Board on

"This service uses data from the US Census and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the two places, using the Xerox PARC Map Server."
- History of Cartography Project (University of Wisconsin)
This site advertises "the History of Cartography Project [which] is a research, editorial, and publishing endeavor drawing international attention to the history of maps and mapping. The Project’s major work is a multi-volume illustrated book series titled The History of Cartography, published by the University of Chicago Press." The Web site contains samples from this work, including many digitized images of historical maps and charts.

- Microsoft terraserver
The images in the Microsoft(r) TerraServer Web site come from two sources.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) provides georectified digitized
aerial photographs (known as digital orthophotoquads). SPIN-2 provides high-resolution satellite images, products of a joint Russian/American venture to market declassified satellite photographs from sophisticated Russian mapping satellites.

“The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) is internationally recognized
as a leading centre of excellence in the use of earth-observation data.”
- NASA’s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)
The SRTM data flight occurred Feb. 11-22, 2000 on STS-99 and successfully fulfilled all mission objectives. Following a lengthy calibration and validation phase, the 12 terabytes of raw data are currently being processed into digital elevation maps. In January, 2002, NASA began public distribution of some smaller data sets from sites within the United States.

The United States federal government is possibly the world’s largest publisher, producing hundreds of new maps each year.
Many titles are included in the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications. Maps also appear on agency websites.

The Bureau of the Census is reponsible for the decennial censuses and produces a variety of demographic mapping products.

- Environmental Protection Agency
EPA's EnviroMapper can be used to view and query EPA-regulated facility information stored in the Envirofacts Warehouse. It can also be used to view environmental statistics, profiles, and trends; environmental information for US metropolitan areas participating in the Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT) project; environmental information for watersheds; and Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). The EPA also produces ozone maps in season as part of its EMPACT, Environmental Monitoring for Public Access & Community Tracking program.
