Getting Started

Information on women throughout the world is abundantly available in the Morris Library. This select bibliography can be used to identify books, newspaper and periodical articles, encyclopedia entries and online information. A few good starting points are:

DELCAT
LOCATION: Library Databases
DELCAT, the online catalog for the University of Delaware Library, may be used to find books and other materials in the library's collection. Items can be searched by author, title, or subject keywords. A keyword anywhere search, using significant words that pertain to your topic, may also retrieve appropriate materials, e.g. women and islam*. (“*” is used for truncation.) DELCAT will also list the titles of journals which the library owns, although it will not provide you with information on specific articles within the journals. To identify periodical articles, consult a periodical index. Several indexes are described below.
Academic OneFile  About Get It!
LOCATION: Library Databases
An online periodical index that contains references to scholarly and some general interest periodicals published from 1980 to the present in a wide variety of disciplines. Also included is the full text of many articles.
GenderWatch
LOCATION: Library Databases
A full-text collection of international journals, magazines, newsletters, regional publications, special reports and conference proceedings devoted to women’s and gender issues. A list of publications included in GenderWatch is available from the database description page.
The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Women's Issues Worldwide. Editor-in-chief, Lynn Walter. Westport, Conn.: Greenwood, 2003. 6 vols.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Each volume has a distinct call number. Check DELCAT for call numbers.)
A set that presents current data on contemporary women's issues in more that 130 countries. There is one volume for each of the following areas: Asia and Oceania, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, North America and the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The individual chapters focus on a single country and present information on a wide variety of topics including: education, employment, family, health, law, politics, religion, sexuality, and violence. Each chapter includes suggested readings, web sites and organizations, and a selected bibliography.
LexisNexis Academic
LOCATION: Library Databases
A collection of databases that provide full-text information on a variety of topics from newspapers, magazines, legal literature, and other sources. In addition to providing access to national and world news, LexisNexis Academic also includes the most recent two years of data from Contemporary Women's Issues. To access Contemporary Women’s Issues, begin by selecting Business News, use the Guided Search option, then select Industry News. Enter appropriate keywords, then enter “Contemporary Women’s Issues” as the publication title.
LexisNexis Statistical
LOCATION: Library Databases
A databases that indexes and links to statistical tables containing international, national, and state data. Searches may be narrowed by geographic, demographic, economic breakdowns, or by frequency of data; and a period of coverage may be specified. To limit results to statistics that are broken down by gender, select “By sex” as a search category.
Women’s Studies International  About Get It!
LOCATION: Library Databases
An interdisciplinary combination of eight important files, including the following databases: Women Studies Abstracts (1984-present), Women’s Studies Database (1972-present), Women of Color & Southern Women: A Bibliography of Social Science Research (1975 present), Women’s Health & Development:An Annotated Bibliography (1995), and four databases from the University of Wisconsin.

Additional Periodical Indexes

Alternative Press Index/Alternative Press Index Archive
LOCATION: Library Databases
Indexes alternative and radical publications, including several feminist journals. Coverage is from 1969 to the present.
Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)
LOCATION: Library Databases
A comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It includes a wide range of scholarship, such as working papers from university research institutes and nongovernmental organizatons, conference proceedings and the full text of select journals.
PAIS International  About Get It!
LOCATION: Library Databases
A political science and public policy database which indexes books, journals, and U.S. congressional hearings. International coverage is quite extensive.
Sociological Abstracts  About Get It!
LOCATION: Library Databases
An index with abstracts which covers journals and dissertations in sociology, and related social science disciplines. International coverage of gender-related topics is extensive.

Statistical Sources

LexisNexis Statistical is an excellent source of current statistical information. The Statistical Abstract of the United States (online and also shelved at the Reference Desk) is also a useful source of international statistics. In addition, consider the following titles:

GenderStats. Washington, D.C.: World Bank Group.
LOCATION: Internet (http://ddp-ext.worldbank.org/ext/GMIS/gdmis.do?siteId=9&menuId=GENDERSTATS)
GenderStats is a database of gender statistics and indicators compiled by the World Bank. It is searchable by country and comparison tables can be developed and saved using Excel or another spreadsheet software.
Seager, Joni. The Penguin Atlas of Women in the World. New York: Penguin Books, 2003.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref G1046 .E1 S4 2003)
A volume that presents graphically current statistical data pertaining to women.
United Nations Statistics Division. Statistical Databases
Location: Internet (http://unstats.un.org/unsd/databases.htm)
A listing of databases created by the United Nations, including both subscriber access and unrestricted access databates. Several of the unrestricted access databases provide useful statistics that are broken down by gender. One especially useful one is Statistics and Indicators on Women and Men.
A World View of Women: Social, Political, and Economic Attitudes, A Special Report. Washington: Office of Research and Media Reaction, USIA: 1994?
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref HQ1121 .W67x 1994)
This volume provides data on international public opinion regarding a variety of women’s issues including abortion and workforce participation. Countries included in the poll are highly selective.
The World’s Women, 2005: Progress in Statistics. New York: United Nations, 2006.
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref HQ1154 .W95x 2006)
This United Nations publication provides a statistical portrait and analysis of women’s conditions and contributions throughout the world. Data on the United States is included. An earlier edition (1995) is available on Women in Development Network (WIDNET) at http://www.focusintl.com/widnet.htm.

Biographical Sources

Biography Resource Center
LOCATION: Library Databases
A comprehensive database of biographical information on more than one million people from around the world and throughout history. Profiles are drawn from print sources such as Contemporary Women Artists, Feminist Writers, Gay & Lesbian Biography, Notable Black American Women, and Women Filmakers and Their Films.
Biography Reference Bank  About Get It!
LOCATION: Library Databases
Full-text biographical profiles of over 38,000 figures from antiquity to the present, with links to some full-text periodical articles.
Women in World History: A Biographical Encyclopedia. 16 vols. Waterford, CT: Yorkin Publications, 1999- .
LOCATION: Morris Library - Reference (Ref HQ 1115 .W6 1999)
A multivolume set that provides signed biographical essays on individual women, as well as collective entries on topics such as “Astronauts: Women in Space.” The encyclopedia also contains extensive genealogical charts outlining the positions of women in royal families.
