Governor's Taskforce on School Libraries

In 1993, in response to the State Librarian's report, Governor Thomas R. Carper convened a Task Force on School Libraries to improve and extend the library and information services for Delaware K-12 students. In 2003, Governor Ruth Ann Minner, in Executive Order #35, reconstituted the Governor's Task Force on School Libraries.

In 2009, the Governor's Task Force on School Libraries continues its work under the Governor Jack Markell with the approval of the Office of the Governor, Director of Boards and Commissions. The Task Force continues the work of the first group and engages in the following activities:

  • Close communication and shared activities with the Department of Education, through the Education Associate for Library/media/Technology;
  • Developing collaboration among school and public libraries, as well as with college and university libraries, working through the Delaware Division of Libraries;
  • Encouraging the use of Standards for Library Media Centers, Delaware Public Schools by district and schools to assess and improve their programs;
  • Conducting an annual survey to gather data about Delaware school libraries; and
  • Involvement with literacy efforts throughout the State, especially reading initiatives in the schools
