Library Instruction to the English Language Institute

Information for ELI Instructors

International students face numerous challenges when navigating the complex information landscape which characterizes today's academic library.  Providing students with an instruction session led by a University of Delaware librarian will give students valuable and up-to-date information literacy skills, including the ability to:

  • Search for and locate books within the Library
  • Identify credible, authoritative, and objective content on the Internet
  • Navigate Library services such as Circulation, Interlibrary Loan and Reference
  • Use sophisticated database searches to locate scholarly articles on students' research topics

Each Library instruction session is tailored to current class assignments and course objectives.  When a Library instruction session is scheduled, a librarian will collaborate with individual instructors to plan a lesson that meets student needs and is sensitive to the class's level of English proficiency.  All Library instruction sessions to English Language Institute classes are at least 50 minutes in length and incorporate active learning strategies to allow students to gain hands-on practice in using the Library's resources.

Requesting Library Instruction

English Language Institute instructors are welcome to contact the Coordinator of Library Instruction directly to schedule an instruction session, or to fill out the Instruction Request Form. When requesting a class, the following information should be included:

  • Number of students in the class
  • The time during which the class meets
  • Information about students' assignments
  • Desired dates for the session

A common exercise that ELI instructors use to familiarize students with the Library is to bring the class to the Library so the students may locate and borrow books from the Library as a group. If you are planning to bring your students to the Library for an exercise of this type, please contact Circulation prior to the date of your visit.
