Using a Mac - for PC Users

Are you curious about using a Mac as opposed to a PC?  Have you logged into the Windows side of the Macintosh computers in the Student Multimedia Design Center, or had your students do so, because you are more familiar with Windows?  This workshop will give a brief overview to the Mac desktop for Windows users.  The workshop will examine the Mac interface, demonstrate where tools and items are located using Finder and the Dock, and how to accomplish tasks in a Mac that you are used to doing on a PC.

The workshop is open to UD students, faculty, and staff. Seating is limited and registration is required.

Building on a history of great video editing tools, Apple’s latest version of iMovie provides more flexibility for working with themes, adding titles, transitions, and effects to movies with its updated drag-and-drop editor.  This hands-on workshop will explore iMovie ‘09’s intuitive interface, will teach how to manage and save a project, and will cover all of the basics of non-linear video editing.

The workshop is open to UD students, faculty, and staff. Seating is very limited and registration is required.

Introduction to Instructional Media Collection Resources

The Instructional Media Collection Department (IMCD) of the University of Delaware Library will offer UD faculty and instructors an hour-long overview of film and video resources and services available for classroom instructional support and research. The session will begin with a tour of the Instructional Media Department facilities which include viewing carrels, a Viewing Room, and Media Research Room. Participants will be shown how to search the Media Collection in DELCAT and will be given an online tour of the Instructional Media Web site. 

Please Note:  This session does not cover services and resources offered by the Student Multimedia Design Center.

Teaching and Learning with Images:  Introduction to ARTstor

ARTstor is a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences.  This workshop will show participants how to search for images, create and manage image groups, add your own images, and download images for use in presentations.

Research Funding Online

The Research Funding Online workshop will focus on two library databases, Foundation Directory Online and COS Funding Opportunities, which faculty, staff and graduate students can use to identify potential funding resources, such as grants from private foundations, corporations and public charities. The workshop will cover strategies for searching the databases, procedures for using alerting services and RSS feeds and locating additional grant information on the Internet.  This workshop is co-sponsored by the University of Delaware Research Office.

Introduction to Digital Mapping using ArcView 9.2

GIS (Geographic Information System) allows researchers to visually analyze geographic data and attributes of that data, project multiple conclusions, and present findings in such a way that others can easily interpret them.  This class will introduce participants to basic ArcView GIS tools and functions including adding data, symbolizing, joining table data, making queries, and map making.

This workshop introduces the basic functions of RefWorks. Topics covered include setting up an account, exporting citations from research databases, importing citations to RefWorks, creating folders, organizing citations, and creating a Bibliography or References list.

RefWorks Advanced

The Genealogy for Beginners workshop covers the basics for researchers who are just starting to work on their family histories. It presents an overview of the types of records that contain genealogical information as well as strategies for finding and recording this data. Learn how to search the online database Ancestry Library Edition for U.S. census records.

Using Church and Cemetery Records in Genealogical Research

Genealogy researchers can find valuable information in church and cemetery records. Some churches keep records of baptisms, burials, and marriages, which provide dates and family relationships. Tombstones and cemetery records often identify the names of previously unknown family members and reveal much more than just the year and cause of death. This workshop covers the types of information included in these family documents and introduces Internet sites and resources in the University of Delaware collections that can help researchers locate them.
