Orientation to the Film and Video Collection

The Film and Video Collection Department of the University of Delaware Library will offer UD students, faculty, and staff an hour-long overview of film and video resources and services available for classroom instructional support and research. The session will begin with a tour of the Film and Video Collection Department facilities which include viewing carrels, a Viewing Room, and a Media Research Room. Participants will be shown how to search the collection in DELCAT and WorldCat Local and will be given an online tour of the Film and Video website.

Class limited to four participants; registration is required. Please email mtwchk@udel.edu to set up a consultation if class is full.

The workshop is open to UD students, faculty, and staff.

Digitizing Old Formats for Beginners

Do you have treasured memories on old formats? Learn how to transfer them to digital formats for use on a computer. This workshop will cover transferring formats like VHS, vinyl records, audio cassettes, photographic slides, microforms and paper depending on the needs of the participants. An overview of equipment available at the Student Multimedia Design Center will be presented as well as tips for home equipment.

This workshop introduces the advanced functions of RefWorks. Understanding Multimedia File Formats

This workshop will help participants make informed choices when creating and managing multimedia files. Participants will learn the difference between a JPEG and GIF; when would it be better to save an audio recording as a WAV or MP3; and how to differentiate between a variety of audio (e.g., MP3, WAV, etc.), graphic (JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc.) and text formats (PDF, etc.).

This workshop will cover the basics of how to use a mini-DV tape and memory-based video camera with a tripod, all of which are available at the Student Multimedia Design Center. The workshop will cover what the default settings should be, how to test the camera, playback and general tips for shooting.

The Genealogy for Beginners workshop covers the basics for researchers who are just starting to work on their family histories. It presents an overview of the types of records that contain genealogical information as well as strategies for finding and recording this data. Learn how to search the online database Ancestry Library Edition for U.S. census record.

Ancestry Library Edition UD only is available from the Library Databases page.

This workshop is available at no charge and is open to UD students, faculty, and staff.

The workshop is also open to the general public, however online registration is not available. If you are enrolled at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute or are a member of the general public, please register by calling the Reference Department at 831-2432 or emailing

The workshop will focus on using the Foundation Directory Online, and COS Funding Opportunities, Library databases that administrators of nonprofit agencies can use to identify sources for grant funding. The online directory includes detailed information on funders such as private foundations, corporations and public charities. The workshop will cover strategies for searching the database, locating additional grant information on the Internet, and using alerting services and RSS feeds. The University of Delaware Library is a member of the Foundation Center Cooperating Collection network. There is no charge for the workshop, but registration is required.

What's In A Name? Tips on Searching for Personal Names in Genealogical Resources

Genealogical researchers often find it difficult to locate names in the U.S. Census and other historical sources due to the various ways names are recorded. Records tend to focus on male heads of households and may not provide the first or maiden names of female family members. This workshop offers information on the most commonly-encountered problems and strategies that may help you solve them.

The workshop is open to UD students, faculty, and staff and to the general public. Seating is limited and registration is required.
